Preparing The Floor
The floor preparation process is crucial to the end result of a floor coating. Garage or basement floors need to be ground down and cleaned before any coating can be applied. The floor will be cleared of all items and debris to start the floor coating process. Shot blasting or diamond grinding will then be used to even out the surface and create a blank canvas for your floor coating. During the grinding process, professionals will use a grinder with a vacuum attached to limit the amount of free-floating particles.
Application Of Coating
Once the floor is properly prepared, it is time to apply the different layers of coating. A primer may be laid down first, in order to make the coating more durable. Not all applications will require a primer, but when they do, this will need to dry completely before application can proceed.
Next is a base coat, which adheres to the concrete and protects the subfloor from damage. After this is applied, flakes or paint chips are scattered by hand to add texture and color to the floor. When you choose a color or pattern type, this is your choice. Flakes can help make the floor more slip-resistant as well. This will then be left to cure and harden through a chemical reaction process.
Moisture from the base coat will begin to evaporate as it dries. The resin and hardener react together to create a durable solid, resulting in a protected floor. The full curing process can take up to 72 hours, but most homeowners will be able to use their garage floor again after one day.
Some floor coatings can benefit from a clear top coat. This final step can help the coating last a few years longer, resist damage, and avoid fading due to UV exposure. Ask your technicians about a clear top coat to see if it would be beneficial to your floor.
Clearing Off Excess Dust And Debris
Once your floor is completely dry, our team will come back in to clear away excess dust. While the grinding and application process is fairly clean, we want the floor coating to shine once the process is complete. Scraping is also done during this step to ensure that loose flakes are removed from the coating. This will ensure that the coating is smooth and no edges can catch on furniture or cars, leading to imperfections.
FAQ’s
-
Do You Repair Concrete Before Installation?
Before a polyaspartic or epoxy coating can be applied, the floor needs to be even. While small cracks or dents can be covered over or ground down during the beginning stages of floor coating, major issues will need to be repaired before application can be completed. Concrete that is lifting or has major holes will not be repaired by our team at Diamond Custom Coatings. We recommend using a patch and repair kit or working with a professional concrete repair team to create an even surface.

Are There Strong Odors During The Coating Process?
Epoxy and polyaspartic will have odors when being applied. Professional coating products are low odor, especially when ventilation processes are followed. Since the chemical process needs to occur, some odors or fumes will be present. Opening doors and windows will help reduce strong odors from lingering in all parts of your home.
